-FUTURE of EUROPE - PRAGUE: ‘European Political Community’ takes shape in face of Russia’s war: More than 40 European leaders are expected to gather in Prague today for the inaugural meeting of the European Political Community (EPC) . The format, floated by Emmanuel Macron, France’s president, allows for a looser continental grouping of the EU’s 27 members alongside 17 outer-circle countries: aspiring members (Serbia, Ukraine), happy outsiders (Norway, Switzerland) or the recently departed (just Britain).

Senior diplomats argued the EPC can provide such a forum for Europe’s leaders to sit around the table like adults, putting aside the paralyzing debates concerning EU accession and Brexit.

For Steven Blockmans, director of research at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS), the rapidity with which this meeting was organised suggests that it signals that there are "issues here which transcend the bilateral disputes and which concern the future of the European security order."

-WAR & OIL: Saudi Arabia and Russia, acting as leaders of the OPEC Plus energy cartel, agreed Wednesday 5 October to a cut of two million barrels of oil a day in a bid to raise prices, countering efforts by the U.S. and Europe to choke off the enormous revenue Moscow reaps from the sale of crude. The cut represents about 2% of global oil production and is the first in more than two years. OPEC’s decision to curb oil production might be a clear signal that US influence over his Gulf allies are far less than Biden had hoped.

-THE QUESTION: Could the Ukraine War turn nuclear?

Sixty years after the Cuban missile crisis, the world again worries about nuclear war.

The further Ukraine forces advance, the higher the risk that Russia will respond with nuclear weapons.

This Friday, EU leaders will  discuss options to limit the price they are willing to pay for gas imports (as an alternative or in addition to common purchases) — in an effort to avoid driving up the price by competing against each other for the same gas.

After refusing to put forward proposals for weeks, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen this week told MEPs that the Commission is now working on detailed plans on how caps could be implemented EU-wide.

WORK TRENDS
