WAR in EUROPE: Russia to annex four Ukrainian regions
Vladimir Putin will annex four regions in south-eastern Ukraine — none of which Russia fully controls — at 3pm local time in the Kremlin on Friday, in a substantial escalation of the conflict with Kyiv.
"Kherson region, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk People's Republic and Luhansk People's Republic will now forever be part of Russia," Kirill Stremousov, the Russian-installed deputy head of the Kherson region, said on Red Square.
Russia’s forces held highly stage-managed votes last weekend in parts of Ukraine’s Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions under its control, claiming locals had overwhelmingly voted to join Russia by margins of up to 99%.

Yes, Climate Change Is Making Storms Like Hurricane Ian Worse
The science is well-known. Higher average temperatures lead to warmer ocean waters which in turn causes more evaporation. As hurricanes pass over, they absorb more moisture, leading to heavier rainfall. Warmer waters linked to climate change also increase the storms’ wind speed, and can cause hurricanes to undergo so-called “rapid intensification” more often. In less than a day, between Monday and Tuesday, Hurricane Ian became 67% stronger; the stretch of water the storm traveled over was a full 1°C warmer than average, largely due to climate change. Rising sea levels also multiply the flooding danger from what is often the deadliest aspect of a hurricane: storm surge, helping to push flooding further inland.

Liz Truss has been accused of hiding away while her tax giveaway mini-Budget causes economic turmoil, with the Bank of England forced to intervene to prevent a crisis in the UK’s major pension funds.

The Bank has embarked on an estimated £65bn buy-up of bonds during what a Treasury source described to The Independent as “serious concerns about the short-term financial stability of some of the major pension funds in the UK”, and others said there were fears of mass insolvencies.

The 24-hour strike by electricity union FNME lowered capacity from the power grid at a time when France already faces a record number of nuclear reactor outages.

But there is also the problem of plastic waste being found in our river systems, which in turn can eventually find its way into the sea. One way of tackling this growing issue is a pioneering new project set up by the EU, called LIVES: Litter Free Rivers and Streams, that tackles the problem of plastic in cross-border rivers and streams, through joint action. Since 2018 they have collected the staggering sum of 260 tons of waste.

Czech-Slovak border:While Ukrainian refugees accepted, new fears in Central Europe over Middle Eastern migrants
On Thursday, the Czech Republic temporarily reinstated controls on its border with Slovakia in response to an increase in illegal migration.
Vít Rakušan, the Czech interior minister, said in a statement earlier this week that illegal migration, mainly from Syria, had risen by 1,200 per cent this year.
After the announcement from Prague, Austria’s interior minister, Gerhard Karner, said on Wednesday that his country will this week also introduce temporary controls on its border with Slovakia so as to prevent migrants from using Austria as an alternative route.
Prague is calling on the European Union to take more action. Germany’s police union has also called for more security checks on the Czech-German border, although Berlin has so far said it will not do so.

EXPO à voir à Bruxelles et ailleurs...
Depuis quelques jours, c’est la course pour passer d’un lieu à l’autre et découvrir les premières propositions de cette nouvelle saison d’expositions.
Du Musée royal de Mariemont au Musée de la photographie à Charleroi en passant par le Wiels, le CAB, Kanal, Hangar, la Maac et bien d’autres, les ouvertures se multiplient. Art ancien ou contemporain, archéologie, art minimal, photographie, vidéo, sciences… il y en a pour tous les goûts. Y compris dans certains hauts lieux qu’on peut enfin redécouvrir après de longues périodes de fermeture comme à Anvers avec le KMSKA et le MoMu. Côté francophone, c’est le BPS 22 qui va entrer en travaux tandis que ceux-ci se poursuivent au Musée d’Ixelles et devraient débuter dans quelques mois au Musée des Beaux-Arts de Tournai. Mais pour l’instant, malgré les craintes liées à la hausse du prix de l’énergie, les expositions nouvelles sont de retour.
Pour nous faire rêver, vibrer, découvrir, voyager et nous questionner…
Une ouverture sur le monde indispensable en ces temps incertains.
