WAGING WAR - PREPARING PEACE IN EUROPE

Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine’s president, is making an unannounced visit to the Netherlands. He visited the International Criminal Court -which has issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin, Russia’s president, on war crimes charges - where he called for the establishment of a war tribunal to hold Russia to account for alleged war crimes.

“We all want to see a different Vladimir here in The Hague (...)” Zelenskyy said. More here, with POLITICO.

Earlier, Russia accused Ukraine of being behind an attempted drone attack on the Kremlin aimed, it said, at killing Mr Putin. Ukraine denied it.

Why Vladimir Putin will never stand trial in The Hague
On March 17th the International Criminal Court in The Hague issued arrest warrants for Vladimir Putin, Russia’s president, and for Maria Lvova-Belova, the country’s commissioner for children’s rights.
Both are accused of responsibility for illegally deporting children from occupied areas of Ukraine, which is a war crime over which the court has jurisdiction.

Agreement between ambassadors of Member States on joint procurement of ammunition
The Member States’ ambassadors to the EU approved, on Wednesday 3 May, a decision on an assistance measure under the ‘European Peace Facility’ to support the Ukrainian armed forces with €1 billion for the joint purchase of ammunition and missiles, the Swedish Presidency of the EU Council announced.
The agreement reached will allow for the reimbursement of ammunition and missiles produced in Europe through joint purchases.

Greenpeace EU transport campaigner: "Governments must introduce simple and affordable 'climate tickets' for public transport, to cut people's bills and to reduce the oil use driving our planet towards climate disaster". These services could be paid by taxing polluting forms of travel and end tax exemptions for international flights and for aviation fuel.

''European Public Diplomacy'', edited by Mai’a K. Davis Cross, and Jan Melissen, is part of the book series: Palgrave Macmillan Series in Global Public Diplomacy.

The volume is a collection of essays that provide a highly contextualized and granular analysis of European Union public diplomacy. Embedded in the expanding body of comparative literature, with a focus on identity, narratives and norms, this book also offers rich detail about the external face of European regionalism, with all its attractive, albeit uneven, features.

Chap. 5) City Public Diplomacy in the European Union
The aim of this book chapter is to analyze the actions of Europe’s cities and examine how they contribute to spreading a positive, innovative, and unified image of the EU. European cities offer innovative solutions to global problems. From the perspective of this study, the diplomatic action carried out by cities is mainly public diplomacy (PD). Leaving aside the debate on whether the cities, in their role as substate actors, will develop truly authentic diplomacy or not, the authors consider the fact that most of cities' international activities are clearly connected with persuasion, which means that the power cities have when they promote their interests abroad is, mainly, a power to influence ( soft power), which is channeled through activities that are appropriate to PD.

AI will clean up on domestic work this decade - REPORT
Almost 40% of the time we spend on housework and caring duties will be saved by AI within a decade, according to researchers from the University of Oxford and Japan's Ochanomizu University.
Overall, they predicted that 39% of domestic tasks are likely to be automated within 10 years. Grocery shopping and household cleaning are chores highly likely to be automated, while caring for children and other family members are least likely to be handed over to AI, they say.

Increasing youth obesity has been recognised as an important public health issue in Europe, as overweight or obese children are likely to become overweight or obese adults. They are more likely to suffer serious health and social consequences, including a higher risk of premature death and disability in adulthood. Moreover, higher obesity rates are usually found in children from lower socioeconomic groups and disadvantaged areas, illustrating the equity dimension of obesity.

Childhood obesity in European Region remains high: new WHO report presents latest country data
WHO/Europe has published a new Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative (COSI) report, the fifth in a series measuring trends in overweight and obesity among primary school aged children since 2007. The new report highlights that childhood overweight and obesity undermine health across Europe. These conditions are linked to many noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) – from cardiovascular diseases to diabetes and cancer. Today, 1 in 3 school-aged children in the Region are living with overweight or obesity, and the rates are increasing in many countries.
