REBUILDING UKRAINE

On the 1st day of the summit, EU leaders discussed latest developments in relation to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and continued EU support for Ukraine. They also debated on competitivenesssingle market and the economyenergyexternal relations and migration

A new joint assessment released  by the Government of Ukraine, the World Bank Group, the European Commission, and the United Nations, estimates that the cost of reconstruction and recovery in Ukraine has grown to US $411 billion (equivalent of €383 billion). The estimate covers the one-year period from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, to the first anniversary of the war on February 24, 2023.  The cost of reconstruction and recovery is expected to stretch over 10 years and combines both needs for public and private funds.

Needs will continue to rise as long as the war continues. More here with DG NEAR Press Release.

“Ukraine is ready for a decision to start accession negotiations on EU membership already this year. The same readiness is needed from all of you – every leader in Europe (...). Ukrainians need to see your readiness and need to be motivated by it (...).”

China- Russia SUMMIT, 20-22 March 2023

Xi Jinping’s summit with Vladimir Putin reinforced China and Russia’s  shared interest in challenging a world order led by the U.S. and its democratic allies.

"Right now there are changes, the likes of which we haven't seen for 100 years," Mr. Xi told Mr. Putin through an interpreter after the state dinner as the leaders bid farewell. "And we are the ones driving these changes together.” More here, with POLITICO.

Ukraine regards the seizure of children as part of an attempted genocide, but Moscow does not recognize the court’s authority.

FRENCH PROTESTS AGAINST PENSION REFORM

Protests in France against President Emmanual Macron’s controversial pension reforms turned violent. Unions said that over three million people had marched around the country. The Interior Ministry offered a much lower figure, 1.09 million — but even that was more than the authorities had anticipated.

According to the interior minister, 903 fires of “street furniture or garbage” were identified in Paris — where close to 9,600 tons of trash lie on the street because garbage workers are on strike — and 457 individuals were arrested overnight across France. Some 441 policemen were injured in the protests.
